What is a time zone, and what does the color-coded map actually show?
A time zone is a region that keeps the same standard time, which is why local time can differ noticeably between cities even at the exact same moment. The map is color-coded by UTC offset, so the time difference between any two regions is visible geographically at a glance, rather than something you have to calculate.
What is the International Date Line, and why does crossing it change the date?
The International Date Line is an imaginary boundary running mostly along the 180° line of longitude through the Pacific Ocean, marking where the calendar date changes even though the clock time on either side can be identical. Cross it heading west (roughly toward Asia) and you skip a day forward; cross it heading east (roughly toward the Americas) and you go back a day — the same trip repeated in the opposite direction adds or subtracts a full 24 hours from the calendar, not the clock.
Why can you look at "tomorrow" from a beach in Alaska?
Because of two tiny islands in the middle of the Bering Strait: Big Diomede, belonging to Russia, and Little Diomede, belonging to the United States, sit only about 2.4 miles (3.8 km) apart — close enough to see each other — but the International Date Line runs directly between them. That gap in distance translates into a roughly 21-hour gap in the calendar (20 in summer with daylight saving), which is exactly why Big Diomede is nicknamed "Tomorrow Island" and Little Diomede "Yesterday Isle": looking from the American island toward the Russian one is, quite literally, looking a day into the future.
Why does the date line zigzag instead of running straight down 180° longitude?
Politics and trade, mostly. If the line ran perfectly straight, it would slice several Pacific island nations in half, putting different islands of the same country on different calendar dates — a genuine headache for running a government or a business. Kiribati fixed this for itself on December 31, 1994, moving the date line eastward around its Line Islands so the whole country shared one date, aligned with the trade schedules of Australia, New Zealand and East Asia rather than the Americas; that shift is also why Kiritimati (Christmas Island), part of Kiribati, sits in the world's easternmost time zone, UTC+14, and is the first inhabited place on Earth to reach every new year. Samoa made the reverse-direction move in 2011, skipping December 30 entirely — the country went to bed on Thursday the 29th and woke up on Saturday the 31st — specifically to fall on the same side of the line as its biggest trading partners, Australia, New Zealand and China. Those two national decisions, each made for entirely practical economic reasons, are why the date line bends sharply around the Pacific instead of tracing a straight line, and why the exact time difference between some neighboring islands can run as high as 25 or 26 hours instead of a clean 24.

Why does the whole world agree on time zones in the first place?
Before the 1880s, it didn't — every town kept its own local time based on the sun, which was mostly harmless until railroads made it genuinely dangerous, since two trains scheduled against two different towns' clocks could end up on the same track at the same moment. Scottish-Canadian railway engineer Sandford Fleming proposed the fix in 1878: divide the globe into 24 time zones, each 15 degrees of longitude and exactly one hour apart. U.S. railroads adopted his system in 1883, and in October 1884, delegates from 25 nations met in Washington, D.C. for the International Meridian Conference, formally setting the prime meridian at Greenwich, England and defining every time zone in the world as an offset from it — the exact same worldwide grid this map is still built on today.
