Are US, UK and EU sizes actually the same, and are these conversions exact?

Where do shoe sizes actually come from?
The numbers trace back further than any modern brand — to a 1324 English royal decree by King Edward II that standardized the inch as the length of three barleycorns laid end to end. English shoemakers later adopted the barleycorn itself — a third of an inch — as the increment between consecutive shoe sizes, which is still exactly how UK and US shoe sizing work today: each whole size step is one barleycorn, about 8.5mm, apart. Historians note there's no solid evidence Edward II personally decreed shoe sizing specifically — that detail was likely added by shoemakers' guilds sometime after his reign — but the barleycorn-based inch he formalized is genuinely the same unit modern shoe sizes still quietly run on 700 years later.
