It calculates the exact difference between two dates — your date of birth and today — in years, months and days, based on real calendar dates rather than a rough average. Because it works from actual calendar dates, leap years are handled automatically with no manual adjustment needed, which is where doing this by hand most often goes wrong.
Can it show age in days, weeks and months too, and calculate someone else's age?

What does the life expectancy estimate actually show?

It's a statistical population average, not a prediction for any individual — useful as a rough reference point, not a medical or actuarial forecast.
Why do calendars need leap years in the first place?
Earth actually takes about 365.25 days to orbit the sun, not a clean 365 — so Julius Caesar's Julian calendar, introduced in 46 BC, added a leap day every four years to keep pace, close to today's leap year rule but not quite exact. That small overcorrection accumulated into a real drift over centuries — by 1582 the calendar was 10 days ahead of the sun's actual position — so Pope Gregory XIII reformed it, skipping 10 days that October (October 4 was directly followed by October 15) and refining the leap year rule so that century years like 1700, 1800 and 1900 are not leap years unless divisible by 400. That refined Gregorian calendar is still what every modern calendar app, including this calculator, runs on today.
