The project began in Russia in 2002, led by developer Lasse Kärkkäinen alongside founder Steve Lhomme, building on an earlier attempt at an open media container called MCF. It stayed a mostly enthusiast, open-source format for years until 2010, when Google adopted Matroska's container structure as the technical foundation for its own WebM format — meaning the Russian nesting-doll project quietly became part of the backbone of open web video too.
