The friction shows up when a MOV/HEVC file lands on an older Android phone, a Windows PC without the right codec pack, or gets uploaded to a platform expecting MP4/H.264 — the container and codec combination that's completely native on an iPhone can require conversion to play reliably elsewhere.

When does MKV or WebM actually make sense over MP4?

MKV (Matroska) is an open, extremely flexible container popular for archiving high-quality video because it can hold multiple audio tracks, subtitle tracks and virtually any codec inside it without the licensing restrictions some other containers carry — common in media libraries and among people who care about preserving multiple language/subtitle options in one file. WebM is Google's open, royalty-free container built specifically for efficient web streaming (paired with VP9 or AV1 codecs), and it's the format many browsers and web video pipelines prefer natively, trading broad universal-player support for smaller file sizes at equivalent quality and no licensing fees.

Why does converting to GIF produce such a large file for a short clip?

GIF predates modern video compression by decades and uses a comparatively primitive compression scheme with no interframe prediction the way MP4/WebM have (where later frames only store what changed from the previous frame) and a severely limited 256-color palette per frame. A few seconds of video converted to GIF can easily be many times larger than the same clip as a properly compressed MP4, which is why GIF is best reserved for short, simple, silent loops (memes, small UI demos) rather than anything resembling real video content — MP4 or WebM will almost always be the better choice when file size or quality matters.
