Where did the humble CSV file actually come from?
It predates the personal computer by well over a decade. In 1972, IBM's Fortran compiler for its OS/360 mainframe operating system introduced "list-directed" input and output — a way to enter data as values separated by commas or blanks, letting successive commas mark a skipped value. That mainframe-era convenience feature is functionally the same format still called CSV today; the term "comma-separated value" was already in common use by 1983, decades before it was ever formalized. It took until October 2005 for the format to actually get an official specification, when the Internet Engineering Task Force published RFC 4180 — meaning the file format underneath nearly every data export button on the web ran for over 30 years on informal convention rather than a written standard.
